Naturalist and sound collector Veljo Runnel invites you to discover the world of sounds - that which often goes unnoticed, although it accompanies us at every step.
Listening and hearing are similar words, but in terms of perception they mean something very different. We can hear a conversation around us, but only by listening can we understand what is being said. We can hear Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony on a recording, but only by listening carefully do we notice which instruments are currently playing.
The same applies to nature. We perceive that there are sounds around us, but without delving deeper, we do not notice how many different sounds there actually are - how they begin and end, change, fade or emerge. Attentive listening is like meditation: it sharpens perception and helps us create a deeper relationship with our surroundings.
This meeting is not so much a lesson in identifying species as it is a listening exercise. We practice noticing the sound space around us, learning to perceive the layers, dynamics and rhythm of sounds and giving meaning to the sounds we hear.
Come listen, discover and experience nature in a new way.
