Tower tour: A Walk in the World of Kalju

Free

Welcome to Hallimäe, on the edge of Haanjamaa, where one person has built a world for himself. This world isn’t vast, but it’s deep—full of plants, thoughts, self-made solutions, and a distant view. Today’s walk will last up to two hours and will take us into the heart of Kalju’s living environment and his way of thinking. This is a place where time doesn’t rush but flows gently with the character of nature and man.

The path winds through Kalju’s self-established arboretum, where every tree has been planted for a reason—as a memory, an experiment, or simply to find suitable tranquility. From there, we reach his rose beds, where diverse varieties tell their quiet beauty and express Kalju’s carefully chosen taste. The walk takes us past Kalju’s home—modest on the outside, but inside full of ingenious solutions, recycling, small inventions, and life wisdom. Everything here speaks of a man who doesn’t just finish things but lets them evolve.

The tour’s endpoint is the tower. Kalju himself built it, from logs and willpower. The tower isn’t just a viewpoint—it’s his view of life, his inner construction that extends over the forest and time. Those who wish can climb up with the tour guide and enjoy a view that is simultaneously calming and inspiring. The ascent takes time, but those who reach the top will be rewarded with a view and a feeling that no camera can capture.

The walk will be led by the owner of Hallimäe and the builder of the local observation tower, Kalju Sapas, and by filmmaker Kullar Viimne, who directed “The Tower,” the year’s best documentary about the man. Kalju’s story begins here and now, and will continue on cinema screens starting in September.
